Giant FUNCTIONAL Magic 8 Ball - Free Pattern!
Last week I posted a video of the Magic 8 Ball I made and it BLEW UP and I got a ton of requests for a pattern so here goes! I freehanded it the first time around so I apologize for the lack of pictures but I will be sure to take some the next time I make it so that I can include them here. In the meantime, if you have any questions about this just comment.
Magic 8 Ball Crochet Pattern - By The Knotty Redhead - copyright 2024
Materials:
-black worsted weight yarn (you’ll be using it with 2 strands held together, so it helps to have either 2 skeins of yarn or to pre-roll your skein into 2 balls)
-white worsted weight yarn
-size J crochet hook
-size F crochet hook
-large foam dice (I found them 2/1.25 in the toy aisle at Dollar Tree)
-5” round acrylic blank
-E6000 or super glue
-face mask (optional) Recommended if you’re working with E6000 instead of super glue, as it emits some pretty gnarly fumes
-blue cardstock
-white acrylic paint
-teeny tiny paint brush (small enough to paint words on the side of the dice)
-slightly larger paint brush to use for Mod Podge
-Mod Dodge
-yarn needle
-polyfill stuffing
-stitch markers (optional)
-small plastic container (To be used for the dice housing, so big enough that the dice can move around it enough to turn and so that the lip of the container will fit around the acrylic blank) Any color will do, best to get a cheapie one from Dollar Tree so you can trim it down if needed to fit inside the ball.
Pattern:

Bottom half of the ball:
R1: Using 2 strands of black yarn held together and size J hook, ch 20, sl st to 1st ch, ch 1, and sc 30 into the loop. Sl st to the first sc. After this point we will be working in the round. We only attach here to create a cleaner look at the bottom. (30 sc)
R2-9: Repeat rounds 6-13 from the steps for the top half of the ball. (78 sc at the end of R9)
R10-16: *sc around. (78 sc)
Before fastening off, hold the 2 sides of the ball together to see if it’s perfectly round. You may need to add or subtract rows to get the look you want
**Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing
8 patch:
R1: With 1 strand of white yarn and size F hook, make a magic ring, ch 1, sc in magic ring and pull it closed. We will again be working in the round. (6 sc)
R2: *2 sc around. (12 sc)
R3: *sc, 2sc around. (18 sc)
R4: 2sc, *sc 2, 2sc around. (24 sc)

**Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
~With 2 strands of black yarn held together and yarn needle, embroider an 8 into the middle of the white circle, then sew the circle into the middle of the top half of the ball.
ASSEMBLY
Next, take your acrylic blank and put a ring of E6000 or super glue around the edge and center it on the INSIDE of the bottom half of the ball. Place something on top to add some weight while the glue dries (I used a peanut butter jar)
While the glue is drying, take the blue cardstock and cut it into triangles that will fit on the face of the dice. Cut one for each side, and with the white acrylic paint and teeny tiny brush, write out your responses on the triangles. My dice has 6 sides so I did 2 “yes” responses, 2 “maybe” responses and 2 “no” responses. Here’s what I used but you can get creative:
Yes, It is Certain, Ask Later, Can’t Predict, No, My Reply is No
Using the Mod Podge and slightly larger brush, attach the responses to the faces of the dice.
Depending on the container you’re using for the dice housing, you may want to paint the inside or outside of the container so that you can't see the stuffing through the window. I have a clear container inside, so I painted the outside of it black to keep it looking more “authentic” but you can have fun and use bright colors & even add glitter!
Place your dice into the center of the window on the inside of the bottom half, then put a ring of E6000 all around the lip of the container, then set it down over the dice and weigh down until the glue is dry (again, I used a peanut butter jar)
Once dry, take both sides of the ball and sew them together, stuffing as you go. Fasten off & weave in ends.
